Top 5 Tax Preparation and Planning Apps in the US for Q2 2022

The second quarter of 2022 saw significant activity in the tax preparation and planning app category in the United States. Data from Sensor Tower shows how the top five apps performed in terms of weekly downloads, revenue, and active users on a unified platform.

IRS2Go from the Internal Revenue Service had a notable presence, with weekly downloads peaking at around 195K in mid-April before tapering off to approximately 52K by the end of June. The app maintained a high level of weekly active users, starting at around 2.87M and slightly decreasing to approximately 2.46M by the end of the quarter.

Intuit Inc.'s TurboTax: File Your Tax Return experienced a peak in weekly downloads at about 266K in early April, followed by a significant decline to around 13K by the end of June. Revenue remained relatively low, peaking at $42 in early April. The app’s weekly active users also saw a decline, beginning at approximately 1.21M and ending at around 763K.

The MyBlock app by HRB Tax Group, Inc., showed a peak in weekly downloads of about 64K in early April, decreasing steadily to around 4.7K by the end of June. Weekly active users followed a similar trend, starting at approximately 129K and ending at around 70K.

H&R Block Tax Prep: File Taxes, also by HRB Tax Group, Inc., saw a peak in weekly downloads of about 22.5K in early April, which then dropped significantly to just 23 by the end of June. Revenue for the app was almost negligible, with a peak of $29 in early April. Active users started at around 12.5K and decreased to approximately 2.5K by the end of the quarter.

Keeper: Tax Filing & Expenses by Keeper Tax Inc. had a modest performance in weekly downloads, peaking at around 6.7K in mid-April and tapering off to about 1.1K by the end of June. The app maintained a consistent number of weekly active users, starting and ending the quarter with approximately 13K.
